As anyone would expect from a Mario game, the power-ups are sometimes brilliant and just awesome. Because when nostalgia translates into such fun gameplay, it can only be a good thing.Īnd yes, the tanooki costume reminds me of power-ups. The game relies a lot on nostalgia, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

You’ll jump on flag poles, focus on speed and platform rather than exploration, there’s no health meter, and you’ll use the tanooki suit as well. You will once again face off against lava castles or old school airships, reminiscent of old Mario games.īut where Super Mario 3D Land really excels is how well it represents old-fashioned 2D Mario games in a 3D world. They don’t really present a challenge, it’s not hard to knock them down, and it’s easy to understand the strategy and pattern the game wants you to adopt, but implementing that strategy is still fun so much so that you look forward to the boss fights. Not only because Nintendo has developed the levels so well, but also because of the responsiveness, thoroughness and intuition of the control scheme.īoss levels are also a lot of fun, mainly because boss fights are so enjoyable. The levels are well thought out and creative and present you with memorable sequences including platform-based puzzles which can take about a minute to figure out, and you will remember it long after you complete the game. Of course, the game is a little too easy at first, but the difficulty increases afterwards. I can’t stress this enough: Mario’s level design 3D is excellent. The worlds all have a theme, such as desert, forest, or submarine levels, and you’ll be playing very well-designed levels during your time with the game. In typical Mario fashion, we have to go through 8 worlds, each world having five main stages, a boss stage, and a few special stages. Super Mario 3D Land begins as Mario’s old nemesis Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach (gasp!), And the titular Italian plumber sets out to save her. So while you will still see several time-based platform challenges like in the Galaxy games, you will also remember the old Mario Bros. old world and today’s Mario, and gives us a solid package. Super Mario 3D Land, however, ingeniously combines the best of Mario. And since then the only games that have been in the vein of good old Mario are the few remakes and re-releases we got and the two New Super Mario Bros.
#SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2 THEMES SERIES#
When Super Mario 64 first released today, it managed to carry the series from side-scrolling 2D visuals, but the series lost much of its identity. 3 in my best list of Mario games, regardless of systems. Not only is it one of the best handheld games I’ve played in a long time, but it’s also with Super Mario Galaxy / 2 and Super Mario Bros. It’s been a while since the game was released, but is it all it’s meant to be?
#SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2 THEMES PORTABLE#
And then we all got Super Mario 3D Land, Mario’s very first full-fledged release on a portable system. Sure, we had Ocarina of Time 3D and other titles like it, but none of them really wowed the masses. The 3DS was down until November of last year, and although its sales had increased after the massive price drop, we had yet to see any good must-have games on the system.
